YEMEN – CHINA, RELATIONS

The relationship between Yemen and China is characterized by its roots in the depths of history through the close communication that the ancient Silk Road represented in linking communication between the peoples of the two countries. In modern political history, Yemen was one of the first Arab countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China in August 1956, It was the third Arab country after Egypt and Syria. On September 24, 1956, diplomatic relations was formally established between the two countries.

After the restoration of Yemeni unity on May 22, 1990, the relations of cooperation between the two countries witnessed important political, diplomatic, economic, commercial, cultural and military developments, based on solid foundation of true friendship, mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs. The relations of the two countries entered a new stage of development; It opened wide and spacious horizons for the bilateral cooperation. In this context, the Joint Ministerial Committee for Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation (which was established before the Yemeni unification) continued its periodic meetings to discuss cooperation relations between the two friendly countries and peoples and ways to enhance and develop them, which resulted in the signing of many agreements, protocols, minutes and executive programs.

A total of 38 agreements and protocols have been signed between the two parts of Yemen and the People’s Republic of China from 1962 to 1990. This number has doubled since the establishment of the Republic of Yemen in 1990 to more than 55 agreements and memoranda of understanding.
